The Greeting

“Happy Holidays” is almost safe to say. “Merry Christmas” is definitely not. “Happy Kwanza” or “Happy Hanukkah” seems a bit diminishing.  Better to say: “Happy Day”, “Happy Friday”, or “Happy Bank holiday”. But you’d be assuming people are “happy” about a day off from work. You’d also be assuming people are as excited about this particular day as you are.

I’ve been listening to Christmas music since September and still waiting for the Christmas spirit to find me. I’m not exactly happy about it being December 25th and feeling like it’s just another ordinary Friday. Five minutes ago, I passed a woman on the street. I practically forced myself to say “Merry Christmas”. She waved her cellphone in my general direction and smiled. I guess that’s all I can ask for.

Happy holidays!
